Joyce’s Album: LOVE’S LANGUAGES

“A labor of love” is the perfect description for the process of making Joyce’s CD, LOVE’S LANGUAGES, a reality.

“Comecar de Novo”, the very first track, was a challenge. Joyce originally heard its English version, “The Island”, featuring Ivan Lins’ seductive Brazilian music and Alan and Marilyn Bergman’s sensuous words, which reminded her of the heights of previous love encounters.

After obtaining the original Portuguese lyrics by Victor Martins, she thought that, to perform the song with the proper time and mood, she needed to understand what the words meant. As a result, the difficult process of finding a suitable translation began. Joyce tried professional translators, Brazilian consulate officials, and even three consulate security guards, but they failed to translate the music. She left the premises knowing barely three words of the song. Although they were all familiar with and enjoyed the song, that was the best they could accomplish.

It wasn’t until she stopped for a cocktail at restaurant number five that two charming and compassionate young Brazilian employees spent an hour deciphering the meaning of the lyrical words and phrases.

Finally, Joyce’s wonderful friend Cybele gave her a full translation from France a few days later. But the words in Portuguese and English sounded like they were from two different songs. The former discussed starting anew after exiting an emotionally abusive relationship. The latter reveled in the pleasures of a man and woman alone on a desert island, succumbing to their passion beneath the stars.

In March 2018, Joyce went into the studio to record the songs, and so LOVE’S LANGUAGES started.
